Welcome Back!

Happy second semester! There is still time to gain experience, help the community, and build your resume with comm.UNITY! If you were unable to get involved with comm.UNITY last semester there are still of lots opportunities available for all majors! Below you will find brief descriptions of the projects comm.UNITY is currently working on. If you're skills match those needed and you would like to get involved contact the project leader!

Client: REACH CNY

Project Leader: Charlotte Schaefer.

Details: REACH CNY provides resources, education and advocacy programs for a Healthier CNY. This semester we will be working on an agency brochure and a Marketing Campaign for one of their many programs. Those who have skills in Graphic Design, Public Relations and Marketing/Advertising are greatly needed!

Client: PEACE Inc.

Project Leader: Tara Schoenborn.

Details: PEACE Inc. includes well-known programs such as HeadStart, Energy and Housing Services, Foster Grandparent Program, Big Brother and Big Sister, and many others that help people become self-sufficient in their community. The organization has asked us to work on three projects for them: event planning and rebranding for its two fundraisers (graphic design), film a promotional video, and improve the social media. Our team is really close and we have a lot of fun going to Starbucks and Chipotle, and I would love some graphic design or video help!

Client: InterFaith Works of Central New York

Project Leader: Kadisha Philip.

Details: InterFaith Works of Central New York, through education, service and dialogue, affirms the dignity of each person and every faith community and works to create relationships and understanding among us.

Client: Somali-Bantu Community Association

Project Leader: Charlene Hinton.

Details: The Somali-Bantu Community Association is a non-profit organization that assists refugees in transitioning into American society. They requested a website, newsletter, and promotional video. Work needs to be done on organizing and editing the content on their current site. A lot of help can be used in editing video footage and optimizing the website.

Client: Syracuse Northeast Community Center

Project Leader: Dana Sulit.

Details: The Syracuse Northeast Community Center is working to provide niched services for members of the Syracuse community in need. SNCC sponsors after school enrichment, teen mixers, activities for senior citizens, and a variety of other unique services. This semester, we are primarily working to update SNCC's website. We are looking for anyone with an eye for design, solid writing abilities, or web experience, but are also happy to have anyone with no experience at all!

Client: Center for Community Alternatives

Project Leader: Hannah Louys.

Details: Center for Community Alternatives is an organization which helps people find alternatives to incarceration. They work with lawyers and professionals, training them, as well as helping people who have been previously incarcerated to find work, reconnect with their family and more. We are currently looking for people interested in filming/editing/producing a video for the organization, and graphic designers to help make an infographic (brochure), create a new logo and website design. CCA is a great organization, and working with Comm.Unity on this project is a fun way to give back!

Summer Announcements

We will be accepting applications from non-profits wishing to work with us during the 2012-2013 school year on our application page. Applicants will hear from us in September when we return to campus.

Our eboard for the fall has been condensed to three positions with project leaders playing a more active roll in executive decisions. Jessica David is the new Executive Director, Talia Roth is the new Director of Community Relations and Diana Angst is the Director of Marketing. Find out more information about them and getting involved in comm.UNITY on our members page.

Spring Semester Milestone Presentations Monday

Attention all project leaders and members of comm.UNITY!!! We will be holding our first milestone meeting of the semester Monday, March 6th, to present the work you have completed thus far. Please come to room 102 in Newhouse 1 at 7:30 p.m. to view what everyone is working on and offer suggestions and feedback. As a reminder, milestones are MANDATORY for Project Leaders and team members are strongly encouraged to attend. See you Monday!

Spring General Interest Meeting

Milestone 1: Presentations Tuesday

The first Milestone presentations will be held in room 102 in Newhouse 1 on Tuesday, Nov. 1 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. All members of comm.UNITY are encouraged to attend. This will be an opportunity to see what everyone has been working on so far and provide feedback on all the projects.

    Updates for the Week

    E-board Applications

    The deadline for sending in applications is Friday, April 9 at 3 p.m. In order to apply, send your resume and cover letter to comm.unity.su@gmail.com. Your cover letter should list your first, second, and third choices for e-board positions, detail why you're a good fit for the job, and describe your previous involvement in comm.UNITY.

    If you have further questions about the responsibilities of each position, please don't hesitate to contact the person who holds that position now (their name/email is underneath the job description). Interviews will be held the following week (week of March 12). We will be contacting you if you've moved onto the interview round to set up a time that works for both of us.

    Note: if you're interested in applying to be a project leader, that application will become available in the fall.

    The final design is in, and they look awesome. We'll be providing a link soon, but in the meantime, let us know if you'd like to pre-order one for just $10 (buying it after the fact will be $12).     The meeting will feature a speaker from one of our nonprofits, the Interreligious Food Consortium of CNY, which supports people in need of food through a network of emergency food pantries. We'll also be discussing some awesome upcoming events that are being sponsored by our nonprofits!

    Join comm.UNITY in our presentation of social media and its benefits for nonprofits. Philip Johnson, an SU PhD student, will be speaking about the growth of social media and its uses for promoting your nonprofit. How-to sessions will also be given on particular forms of social media. The Social Media Workshop is on Friday November 20, from 3 p.m. – 5 p.m. and will be held at Gifford Community Room, United Way.

    If you are interested in being a project leader or on the executive board next semester, be sure to attend today's general interest meeting at 7:00, NH 1 room 101. Current directors and project leaders will be at the meeting to answer questions and gage interest. Please read about the election process, and the leadership positions beforehand.


    Graphics Workshop

    On Monday, February 9th, Sarah will be leading a graphics workshop for beginners (those who haven't taken GRA 217) from 7-8, and another for intermediate designers from 8-9. Please RSVP to director of adminstration if you would like to attend by Sunday.

    We will be meeting at the bench in NH 1 on the second floor (hall of fame) before the workshop. Please e-mail Sarah with topics you would like to learn.

    We will be holding a meeting on Monday, February 23rd, for those interested in e-board positions and becoming project leaders next year.

    Our next general member meeting will be on Monday, October 27 at 7:00 p.m. We have invited Lynn Hy, Marketing & Events Manager of The Salvation Army of the Syracuse Area Board to speak at the meeting.

    Lynn has been previously employed by The Buffalo Sabres and the Independent Health Foundation.

    She has worked with The Salvation Army since February 2005. Her main job duties include fundraising, volunteer coordination, event management, advertising, marketing, public relations, website and basic graphic design.
